In New York Times bestselling author Marcia Muller's captivating new mystery, private detective Sharon McCone's investigation hits closer to home than ever before...

THE COLOR OF FEAR

When a knock on the door in the middle of the night wakes Sharon, she's wholly unprepared for the horrifying news her father has been the victim of a vicious, racially-motivated attack.

A nationally recognized Shoshone artist, Elwood had been visiting Sharon for the holidays, browsing for gifts in San Francisco's exclusive Marina district when he was set upon by a mob of angry young men. Now he lies in a coma, hovering between life and death.

With little progress on the investigation from the overworked, short-handed police, Sharon resolves to track down Elwood's attackers herself. But when Sharon begins receiving hate-filled, racist threats from a shadowy group, it becomes clear that her pursuit of justice may be putting her own life in jeopardy...

I have read all the Sharon McCone novels over the years, and knowing that Marcia Muller is almost 73, maybe feeling that "The Color of Fear" is her last or near-last novel is to be expected. There was even a synopsis of McCone's cases under the guise of providing an investigator with McCone's background. Sadly, the writing itself was sketchy. Even the action scenes felt summarized. Missing was the passion, the crackling intellect, of both author and protagonist. Even the ripped-from-the-headlines premise (hate crimes) felt awkward and artificial. Happily, I can always return to "Edwin of the Iron Shoes" and reread each to get my Sharon McCone fix.

The Color of Fear A Sharon McCone Mystery Marcia Muller 9781455538928 Books Reviews

This book is about when Sharon McCone's biological father, a Native American, gets brutally attacked by a gang of thugs. It doesn't take long for Sharon MacCone and her agency to get involved with the investigation, especially seeing that the San Francisco Police is overburdened with their own workload of cases. As the plot thickens, the thugs turn out to be run by a roguish but wealthy person who operates out of a run-down mansion. There is plenty of action, suspense, and even an element of mystery in this book. Marcia Muller does a credible job with setting and details. Worth a read.
I've been reading Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone books for years. Unfortunately the last few books in the series haven't been very good. Sharon as an administrator of the agency formed by her and Hy isn't as interesting as Sharon the field detective. In this book Sharon claims she wants to return to the investigative field and I hope she does because these books no longer rival the other female detective books on the market.
Sharon is maturing nicely, acts like a full grown woman now. I love that these all take place where I live so I am familiar with the geography. I kind of feel slightly betrayed that McCone now lives in the high-end section of town, even now has her offices in a mega-corporate type building, she even now drives a class car; have loved McCone because she was so working class, lived working class. But, things change. Marriage has changed McCone so I suppose that's how life is. It's a reflection of San Francisco in general too I guess. Just sort of miss the old McCone just barely making it all work out.
This book read as if it was put together in a hurry. The underlying reasons never made any sense. Character development was limited
But this was not one of her best. A little too simple and a bit trite. Hope the next one is up to her usual standards.
The best that I can say about this book is that it is boring. Not a good summer read. If you are a Sharon McCone fan you will probably read it anyway. As for me, this is the last one. There better and more believable characters out there.
The series does not have the impact that the old one had. Sharon and Hy having all this wealth changes the tone of the story even if the writing is decent and the character development is well done. In this story, Sharon is focused on this one case and not any other work. The old excitement is gone.
