In the third novel in the New York Times bestselling Bibliophile Mystery series, bookbinder Brookly Wainwright gets a lesson in deadly deception...
When it comes to rare books and antiquities, Brooklyn Wainwright is a master. Which is why she's returned home to San Francisco to teach a bookbinding class at Bay Area Book Arts. Unfortunately, BABA director Layla Fontaine is a horrendous host who pitches fits and lords over her subordinates. With the help of her beau, British security officer Derek Stone, Brooklyn manages to put up a brave face and endure.
Unfortunately, someone else is not so forgiving. Layla is found dead of a gunshot wound, and Brooklyn is bound and determined to investigate. But when Layla's past ends up intertwined with Derek's, Brooklyn realizes that the case is much more personal than she thought—and that the killer might want to close the book on her for good.

This is the third book in the Bibliophile mystery series. Brooklyn has returned to San Francisco after her previous escapades in Edinburgh at the book festival. She is preparing to teach a class at the Bay Area Center for Book Arts. She has also finished restoring a book for the center's director, Layla. Brooklyn is uncomfortable with the fact that Layla plans to present the book as a first edition Dickens for the Twist festival auction, for even though it is an old edition, it does not contain the subtle features of that first edition. Layla threatens her and also is a bully to the other members of her staff. She also infuriates Brooklyn by hiring Minka, her arch nemesis and by arriving at a party with her star crossed romantic interest, Derek. Included in her class are several board members along with a new staff member. When Minka is attacked at the center, and later, Layla is shot, Brooklyn is on the hunt to find out what happened. The characters at times are a bit over the top, but overall, the story was a decent mystery and Brooklyn's character does develop some. There is some humor and a bit of madcap chase. Things should get interesting in the next book in the series due to some significant changes in circumstance for some of the characters. The book includes some more information on bookbinding, including a glossary at the end.Tags : The Lies That Bind: A Bibliophile Mystery [Kate Carlisle] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. In the third novel in the New York Times bestselling Bibliophile Mystery series, bookbinder Brookly Wainwright gets a lesson in deadly deception... When it comes to rare books and antiquities,Kate Carlisle,The Lies That Bind: A Bibliophile Mystery,Berkley,0451231694,FIC022000,Mystery & Detective - General,Bookbinders,Bookbinders;Fiction.,Murder - Investigation,Mystery fiction,Rare books - Conservation and restoration,Rare books;Conservation and restoration;Fiction.,San Francisco (Calif.);Fiction.,AMERICAN MYSTERY & SUSPENSE FICTION,Conservation and restoration,Crime & mystery,FICTION Mystery & Detective Amateur Sleuth,FICTION Mystery & Detective Cozy General,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,FICTION Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths,Fiction,Fiction - Mystery Detective,Fiction-Mystery & Detective,General Adult,MASS MARKET,Monograph Series, any,MysterySuspense,Rare books,United States, women sleuths; amateur sleuths; cozy mystery; murder; contemporary; book restoration; book repair; bookbinding; rare books; San Francisco; California; Bay Area; romance; dating and relationships; humorous; teaching; books about books; Bibliophile Mystery series; mystery books; cozy mysteries; crime books; murder mystery books; mystery; detective novels; mystery thriller suspense; mystery and thrillers; fiction; fiction books; mysteries; mysteries and thrillers; cozy; cozy mystery books; police; novels; books fiction, women sleuths;amateur sleuths;cozy mystery;murder;contemporary;book restoration;book repair;bookbinding;rare books;San Francisco;California;Bay Area;romance;dating and relationships;humorous;teaching;books about books;Bibliophile Mystery series;mystery;cozy mysteries;mystery books;cozy;murder mystery books;cozy mystery books;detective novels;crime books;mystery and thrillers;police;mystery and suspense;mystery novels;fiction;novels;mysteries;fiction books;mysteries and thrillers;books fiction,FICTION Mystery & Detective Amateur Sleuth,FICTION Mystery & Detective Cozy General,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,FICTION Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths,Fiction - Mystery Detective,American Mystery & Suspense Fiction,Conservation and restoration,Rare books,Fiction,MysterySuspense,Crime & mystery
The Lies That Bind A Bibliophile Mystery Kate Carlisle 9780451231697 Books Reviews
Just discovered this series and now can't wait to get copies of books #1 & #2. Absolutely loved the characters, the setting, and the voice of this author. I want to see the world through Brooklyn's eyes, and like reading the bookbinding tips that are woven throughout the story. Probably the only criticism I have is that Derek too often seemed a bit too "sympathetic" when comforting her, but since none of the times lasted too long it didn't put me off in my reading. Well, I guess I have one other criticism--that I was terribly disappointed when it ended! But that's a good thing, since it will help me eagerly anticipate the arrival of books #1 & #2!
The mystery was okay, though the main character seems to often befriend the villain. But I found the term "nun-infested" school very offensive. The character considered certain expressions by others as non PC, but her correctness does not extend to Catholics. A distracting and unnecessary attitude.
This is a fantastic series! I absolutely LOVE it! Kate Carlisle is an amazing writer. I feel like Brooklyn Wainright and Derek Stone are my friends! I wish they were! The mysteries are excellent and there is always plenty to laugh about. I very highly recommend this series as well as Kate Carlisle's other series, "Fixer Upper Mysteries" as they, too are very well written!! Kate Carlisle is an amazing author. I only wish she could write faster so I can read more about Brooklyn and Derek as well as Shannon!
I love these books. I swear, they are addicting! They are well-written, funny, and intelligent. Brooklyn Wainwright is smart, funny, and stubborn. It has been so refreshing to pick up this book after a long day at work or after studying and just relax into the story. I can almost picture every character. The more I read the series, the more into focus they become.
There is very little foul language, no bed hopping, and lots of smart women. Some do things a little differently than the rest of us (like Brooklyn's mom), but they are intuitive. The love the Wainwright family has for each other is very apparent.
Others before me have written about the plot and characters so I leave the reader to check them out for further details. As for my thoughts on the book, I was so happy to fall back in love with Brooklyn's world and the people who hang out there. I found myself alternately laughing and groaning as I cheered Brooklyn through this latest romp. These books take on a familiarity much like a comfortable sweatshirt. The cast of supporting characters is delightful and leaves interesting questions. Gabriel and Guru Bob? Gabriel and Derek? Gabriel and Brooklyn? I hope Ms. Carlisle continues to give us enticing glimpses of Gabriel's enigmatic role in upcoming books. I loved the fact Derek and Brooklyn kept getting interrupted. A trope, but a fun one in my opinion.
While each of the books stand alone, with just enough back story given in each to help the reader understand the current situation, why deny yourself the pleasure? Go read HOMICIDE IN HARDCOVER and IF BOOKS COULD KILL. I prefer to read on my , but I also bought these books in paper to go on the keeper shelf in my library. I eagerly await the next entry in this series, MURDER UNDER COVERS, coming in May, 2011.
Brooklyn Wainwright is in San Francisco teaching a bookbinding class at Bay Area Book Arts. Unfortunately, BABA director, Layla Fontaine is a terrible leader who connives, schemes and swindles to get ahead. With the help of her on and off-again boyfriend, Derek Stone, Brooklyn is determined to endure. But, someone else doesn’t feel the same. Layla is found shot dead, and Brooklyn is determined to investigate. Will Brooklyn be able to find the truth before the book closes on her? I loved this mystery story. It had everything needed in a great cozy mystery quirky characters, a dazzling setting, an intriguing plot, and an ending that you will not see coming. I also loved the romance that comes to life between Derek and Brooklyn. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great cozy read.
I was so excited about starting this series about Brooklyn, who restores books, even enjoyed her unique family and childhood. The first in the series I thought interesting and a good tight mystery; the second not so much and I'm the one who complained about the 'fluff' in every book that added nothing to the story. Now this third is not even well written in my opinion. I don't need to buy the fourth.
